Getting Around Cameron Highlands – What Are Your Options?
Here are some ideas on how you can get around Cameron Highlands once you are here. The challenges that are unavoidable in the highlands are the narrow roads and hilly terrain.
But there’s a transportation mode for you whether you’re working with a shoestring budget or just want to be safe and comfortable.
Let’s proceed. We’re assuming you’re not planning to drive yourself in this post.
Walking And Taking A Taxi
You should be able to find a taxi or e-hailing driver in the major townships like Tanah Rata and Brinchang fairly easily. Some drivers offer all-day rates too.
We don’t recommend relying only on your own two feet to get around Cameron Highlands.
This is especially so if you plan to visit any tea plantation because the roads to these tourist hotspots are often highly congested. It is difficult for drivers to see (and avoid) pedestrians around the narrow corners.
You can, however, explore places like Kea Farm Market on foot.
Walking around the townships is also doable but some parts can be quite steep. You’ll also have to find your own way to cross the main road as there are few zebra crossings and no pedestrian bridges.
If you do plan to walk for most of your time in Cameron Highlands, these are what you need:
- Rain poncho
- Waterproof pants (if hiking through the jungle)
- Comfortable shoes
- Hat and sunscreen
- Mosquito repellent (mosquitoes love foreign blood very much)
- Drinking water
This option is recommended for small groups below 4 pax with good mobility. We do not recommend this option if you have little children or elderly with you.
Note: We have seen tourists with rental motorcycles and scooters in Cameron Highlands. If you are staying at a hostel or homestay, check with the owners if they have some to rent out. This is a risky but convenient way to get to the more remote attractions.
Private Tour With Explore Camerons
If you’re starting your journey from Ipoh, book a private tour with us and you won’t have to worry about transport for most of the day.
Not only are our guides and drivers familiar with the roads and driving conditions of the highlands, but they can help you decide where to go too.
And we have many different-sized vehicles (including MPVs) that are comfortable for groups above 4 pax.
Our usual hours for our Ipoh to Cameron Highlands day tours are typically from 8:30am to 6pm (~10 hours) with pick up anywhere in Ipoh.
At the end of the tour, we can drop you off at your chosen location in Cameron Highlands, or you can follow the guide/ driver back down to Ipoh.
If you are staying overnight in Cameron Highlands and require our services the next day, this can be arranged too (overnight charges may apply for the guide/driver to stay overnight in Cameron Highlands).
We recommend taking a private tour if you are travelling with elderly or children. Or if you happen to have a lot of luggage.
Conclusion
There’s no public bus system in Cameron Highlands so getting around for sight-seeing is limited to taking taxis or tour services.
You can walk but you really need to be mindful of the terrain, weather, traffic and how far attractions are from each other.
